Abstract

Harriet Mather (1898-1984) was a Denison alumna and nurse. She spent most of her career at the Southern Baptist Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana, where she worked as a director of nurses and the associated nursing school. In 1943, the school was renamed the Mather Nursing School in her honor. The Harriet Mather Papers, dated 1925-1984 December 15, contain materials related to Mather’s nursing career and the Southern Baptist Hospital. There is also a scrapbook of materials related to Denison University’s centennial (1931) and sesquicentennial (1981).

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Harriet Mather Papers, dated 1925-1984 December 15, contain materials related to Mather’s work as a nurse. Much of the collection is specific to the Southern Baptist Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana, where Mather worked for more than thirty years. The collection includes correspondence to and from Mather, Southern Baptist Hospital newsletters and informational booklets, and speech transcripts. There is also a scrapbook of documents related to Denison University’s centennial (1931) and sesquicentennial (1981).

Collection Historical Note

Harriet Livingston Mather was born on June 25, 1898. In 1921, she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Denison University, and in 1923 she received a diploma in nursing from Christ Hospital School of Nursing in Cincinnati, Ohio. Mather began her long career in nursing the following year as an assistant operating room supervisor at Christ Hospital and held this position for two years.

In 1926, Mather began working at Southern Baptist Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana. She initially worked as an operating room supervisor before she became the director of nurses and oversaw the school of nursing at the hospital. In 1943, the school was renamed the Mather School of Nursing in her honor, and Mather became the director of the school in 1948. She held this position until 1958. The Mather School of Nursing, a diploma program, operated until 1972 when it closed due to students’ preference for degree programs.

Harriet Mather died in 1984.
