Abstract
Donald Frazier Eschman (1923-2008) graduated from Denison University in 1947. After earning his master’s and doctorate degrees from Harvard University, he began a more than thirty-year career in the geology department at the University of Michigan. The Donald F. Eschman Papers, dated 1955 May-1985, consists of geological articles Eschman authored during his time at the University of Michigan.
Administrative/Biographical History
Donald Frazier Eschman was born on October 22, 1923, to Agnes (Frazier) and Karl Eschman. He attended Denison University where his father worked as a professor of music. While attending Denison, Eschman joined the Navy V-12 Program. During World War II, he left school and served in the pacific. In 1946, Eschman married Dorothy Ruth Nelson. He returned to Denison and graduated in 1947. Eschman continued his education and received both a master’s degree (1950) and a doctorate (1953) from Harvard University.
Eschman began his academic career as an instructor in geology at Tufts College. He worked at Tufts from 1951 until 1953, at which point he joined the Department of Geology at the University of Michigan as an instructor. Eschman continued at the University of Michigan, working his way to the position of professor. He also held the positions of chairman of the department of geology and mineralogy (1961-1966) and director of the program in environmental studies (1971-1978). He retired in 1985.
Eschman died on November 15, 2008.
