Doane Organ (subject file) | Archives and Special Collections Catalog
The William Howard Doane Library contains an organ that originally belonged to W.H. Doane. The organ is located in the Atrium area on level A and is no longer a complete organ, only the facade. The organ was given to Denison by the Doane family and it previously resided in the Doane Academy building in the third floor Assembly Room (Chapel). The organ was dis-assembled in the 1960's during the remodeling of Doane and was moved to storage where it resided until it was installed in the library in 1985. Brayton Stark, University Organist Emeritus, was instrumental in rescuing the organ and having it installed in its present location.
The file contains correspondence between Brayton Stark, Wally Chessman, the University Historian, and William Sharp, Physical Plant, detailing the plan and problems with the organ and its eventual relocation and restoration. Correspondence from organ enthusiasts is also included, along with biographical information about William Howard Doane and his instrument collection.
