Abstract
Lorena Woodrow Burke (1877-1967) was a Denison University alumna. She served on the Denison University Board of Trustees from 1937-1959. The Lorena Woodrow Burke Papers, dated 1934-1962, contain two scrapbooks and campus photographs that document Denison University directly prior to and during her time as a trustee of the University. Also in the collection is a disassembled scrapbook and correspondence related to the life of Albert Schweitzer.
Administrative/Biographical History
Lorena Woodrow Burke was born on February 13, 1877, as Lorena Matillijah Woodrow. She graduated from Denison University in 1906. Lorena married Charles Felix Burke, a 1904 graduate of Denison University, in 1910. Charles served as a Denison University trustee from 1927 until his death in 1937. Upon her husband’s death, Lorena was elected as a Denison trustee in his place. The Lorena Woodrow Burke Chair in English was endowed that same year. Lorena served as a trustee until 1959. She died in 1967 at age 90.
