Dr. Richard Robert Royer was born in California in 1921 and grew up in New Jersey. He enrolled at Denison University in 1941 and attended until 1943 at which point he enlisted in the Navy V-12 program at Wayne University School of Medicine. (Wayne University was renamed Wayne State University in 1956.) Royer married Carolyn “Patsy” Wander in 1948. The couple had three children together.
After completing a fellowship in St. Louis, Missouri, Royer and his family relocated to Michigan where he worked as a physician for the remainder of his life. He died in 2016.
