Abstract

Richard Royer (1921-2016) was a physician for more than 50 years. He attended Denison University for two years (1941-1943) before he enlisted in the Navy V-12 program at Wayne University (renamed Wayne State University in 1956) School of Medicine. The Richard Royer Papers, dated 1941-2016, contain materials regarding Royer’s relationship with Denison University both as a student on campus, with the United States Navy during World War II, and as a Denison University alumnus. The collection includes correspondence, newsletters to men and women serving in the United States military, and materials related to Royer’s 50th class reunion.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Richard Royer Papers, dated 1941-2016, contain materials regarding Royer’s relationship with Denison University both as a student on campus, with the United States Navy during World War II, and as a Denison University alumnus. The collection includes correspondence, newsletters to men and women serving in the United States military, and materials related to Royer’s 50th class reunion.

Collection Historical Note

Dr. Richard Robert Royer was born in California in 1921 and grew up in New Jersey. He enrolled at Denison University in 1941 and attended until 1943 at which point he enlisted in the Navy V-12 program at Wayne University School of Medicine. (Wayne University was renamed Wayne State University in 1956.) Royer married Carolyn “Patsy” Wander in 1948. The couple had three children together.

After completing a fellowship in St. Louis, Missouri, Royer and his family relocated to Michigan where he worked as a physician for the remainder of his life. He died in 2016.
