Description:
There are many references of Denisonians and their involvement with the Civil War. In the Memorial Volume of Denison University (1831-1906) on page 273-274, there is a list of Denison Alumni in Army Services that gives names, class years, position, and war(s) fought. The subject file lists a number of alumni with additional information, such as which Ohio Volunteer Infantry they served and in some cases, whether they served in the Union or the Confederacy. Additionally, the subject file includes information about enrollment during the war, Johnny Clem of Newark, Cyrus Evans, the Atkinson brothers from Pataskala, and a photocopy of a Regiment enlistment description book listing names and vital informaion of soldiers in the 185th Regiment. Additionally, copies of transcribed letters to Rev. Daniel Shepardson are included in the reference file with a note that states that the original letters are located in PP02, The Papers of Daniel Shepardson. It is also worth noting that an original poster of Civil War deserters in this area and surrounding counties is held in the large flat files under RG30.
