Scope and Contents of the Materials

The papers of professor Charles "Tony" J. Stoneburner who taught English at Denison University from 1966-1992.

This collection is divided into many parts. First, the personal papers includes material that was donated initially in the 1990s. These cover personal history, family history, Denison University administrative and teaching files, professional activity, and extensive correspondence with colleagues, friends, and notable figures.

The second part of the collection consists of 474 volumes of Dr. Stoneburner’s journals, dating from 1951 to 2020. The journals are filled with writings of Dr. Stoneburner’s daily life, intellectual insights, event notes, literary ideas, and religious reflections. They also contain letter drafts and some drawings by Dr. Stoneburner. The journals in and of themselves are 25 boxes in total, while there are 4 other boxes of other writings and correspondences that were included in the second acquisition.

Collection Historical Note

Born in 1926 in New York, Charles “Tony”  J. Stoneburner was the eldest of three children and grew up in a strong Methodist family. By 1930, his family was living in central Ohio. From 1942 to 1946, Tony attended Depauw University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in English. He went on to earn other degrees from Drew University, Yale, and University of Michigan. While working as a teaching assistant at University of Michigan from 1960 to 1965, Tony met Patricia Pickett in Ann Arbor Michigan and married her in 1962. Three years later, in 1966, Tony began working in the English Department at Denison University. Carol Stoneburner, Tony and Pat’s only child, was born in 1967.

Access Restrictions: Microfilm may not be read without his permission during his lifetime. Previously, the journals were to be assigned restricted access, however in 2020, the creator indicated that this stipulation can be removed. (-SKWG, 2021)

Acquisition Source: Donated by Tony Stoneburner to the Denison University Archives.

Acquisition Method: An initial acquisition of letters, family history, writings, and similar material was deposited by Tony Stoneburner in the 1990s. A second acquisition of mostly journals and also other material that overlap with the first acquisition, was deposited by Tony Stoneburner in November 2020.

Finding Aid Revision History:

Original processing and inventorying took place between 1990-2015.

Converted legacy written finding aid to Archon in 2015 by Parker Sumwalt.

The front matter and inventory were revised in 2021 by Sarah Kovacic to include the second major acquisition of materials (journals) donated by Tony Stoneburner.

Additional edits, additions, and maintenace were performed by University Archivist Sasha Kim Griffin in 2021-2022.
