Abstract
Mary Vashti (Jones) Funk was a Denison University alumna and lawyer in Ohio. The Mary Vashti (Jones) Funk Papers, dated circa 1860s, 1913-1989, contain a scrapbook and other materials from Funk’s time as a student at Denison University. The collection also contains correspondence with friends and colleagues during her six-decade career as a lawyer.
Administrative/Biographical History
Mary Vashti (née Jones) Funk was born in 1896. She attended Denison University and graduated in 1917 before completing two years at The Ohio State University College of Law. Funk passed the bar and began working with her father, Abbe L. Jones, in 1923. She was the first lawyer to practice in Muskingum County, Ohio. Lawrence H. Goldcamp and Carl F. Funk also joined the practice under the name Jones, Goldcamp, and Funk. Mary Vashti Jones and Carl F. Funk married in 1938.
In addition to her career in law, Funk was active in her community and served as a member of the Salvation Army Board, the Zanesville Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA), the Avondale Children’s Home, Zanesville City Schools Board of Education, Muskingum County Community Foundation Trustees, Ohio University-Zanesville Advisory Board. She also served as a board member of the Bethesda Health Foundation from 1973-1991 and as president from 1980-1983.
In the late 1980s, Funk retired from practicing law after a 65-year career. She died in 1999 at the age of 102.
