Philips B. Boyer was born in Library, Pennsylvania, in 1902, and he graduated from Denison University in 1924. Boyer married Arabella Jeanette Hornbeck in 1928, and they had two children, Peter and Donald. Boyer died in 1979.

William Howard Doane was born in Preston, Connecticut, on February 3, 1832. He attended Woodstock Academy and served as the school’s choir director. It was during this time that Doane converted from the Presbyterian to the Baptist faith. He graduated in 1848 and began working for his father’s cotton manufacturing company. Doane later joined J. A. Fay & Company, a woodworking machinery company. He married Mary Frances Treat in 1857. Meanwhile, Doane’s professional success continued, and he was named President of J. A. Fay & Company in 1861.

In connection with his Baptist faith, Doane edited more than 43 collections of hymns and composed more than 2,000 musical pieces. Doane also supported Baptist churches and schools. He was a major contributor to Granville Academy (a Denison University preparatory school), which was renamed Doane Academy in 1895 as a result. Denison University awarded Doane an horary doctor of music degree in 1875, and he was a major benefactor of the University. Doane died in 1915.
