Historical Note: Born in 1926 in New York, Charles “Tony”  J. Stoneburner was the eldest of three children and grew up in a strong Methodist family. By 1930, his family was living in central Ohio. From 1942 to 1946, Tony attended Depauw University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in English. He went on to earn other degrees from Drew University, Yale, and University of Michigan. While working as a teaching assistant at University of Michigan from 1960 to 1965, Tony met Patricia Pickett in Ann Arbor Michigan and married her in 1962. Three years later, in 1966, Tony began working in the English Department at Denison University. Carol Stoneburner, Tony and Pat’s only child, was born in 1967.
